The House of Spirits

The word vodka is a Russian diminuitive meaning "little water" from the word voda. Words relating water and alcohol have been used in Europe for centuries - eau de vie and aqua vitae to name just two.

Vodka is usually distilled from a malted mash of grains but potatoes can - and are frequently - used also.

The word gin is derived from the Dutch word genever, which is the juniper berry most commonly used - alone or with other herbals - to produce gin's unique flavor. Specific recipes vary with each distiller.

Gin, like vodka, is also distilled from grains - corn being commonly used in Dutch genever and American gin. The spirit is then aromatized with herbs, berries and spices by maceration or running the spirit through them.
