Come check us out and say hello to our tiki girls!
Not a chance! Least not in THIS house!
The House of Spirits took Voodoo Tiki and the Tiki girls on the road this past weekend both east and west.

Friday night we set up shop at Howards Club H in Bowling Green, Ohio from 11pm to 1am. We had the tiki girls on hand to pass out samples of Blue Kiwi Margaritas, Fresh Lime Margaritas and Prickly Pear Margaritas.
Two different bands played while we were there and Brennan and I had great fun talking to everyone who came out that evening.

Saturday night, Elise and I headed out to Jewels in Austinburg with tiki girls and a plan to make the country and western bar swing tiki. Our fabu event planner, Michelle, joined us and kept everything rolling smoothly.
Wyld Ryde was playing that night. if you haven’t seen this band yet, you must check them out. They are phenomenal and the loyal crowd at Jewels just loves them. Easy to see why!

The tiki girls passed out samples of Prickly Pear & Blue Kiwi margaritas while the crowd danced to great C&W music, both live and DJ’d.
The crowd was awesome. Everyone was out having fun, dancing, socializing. We had a very warm reception to our product and the opinions seemed to be split equally between the Prickly Pear and Blue Kiwi flavors.
As we like to do, we had people drawing for prizes throughout the entire event. We gave away keychains, tshirts, frisbees and vinyl coolers.

As a grand finale to a VERY fun and energetic evening, Elise & Michelle arranged for a limbo contest. With the tiki girls holding the pole, Jewels patrons lined up to test their limbo skills. Everyone was competing for a grand prize which included all the above giveaways.
As you can see, it was a blast. We all had great fun - both those watching and those dancing. The DJ rocked the house with a great selection of music to spur on the limbo spirit and, eventually, we had ourselves a winner!

All in all, it was great fun this past weekend and we can’t wait to do more of it as the season really kicks into gear.
Check back here often for event updates.

It’s been a little over two years now since absinthe has become once again legal in the US. There are now something like over 20 brands available in the American market.
Personally, I’ve only tried two. One shall remain nameless b/c my mother taught me if I had nothing nice to say, blah, blah, blah…..
The other… well the other completely changed my hastily made, and narrowly-based, opinion on absinthe.
I had the fortune of being introduced to Stephen Gould from Maison de la Vie, Ltd. by my very good friend Scott Suskowicz of DuoHome in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. Through a happy accident, Stephen walked into Scott & Tim’s store one day last spring and began telling them of his adventures in absinthe formulation. They gave him my contact info and Stephen and I began corresponding.
This past winter, Stephen and I finally hooked up over lunch. (At the fabulous Peppermint Thai Cuisine, by the way.) He was kind enough to bring a pre-production sample of his upcoming REDUX Absinthe. I just couldn’t help myself and had to at least smell it before I could whisk it home with me to try.
I was amazed. Stephen has done a tremendous amount of research on authentic 19th century absinthes and used many herbs in his blend. The smell alone was so different than my first experience with that “other” brand. This smelled like what I always thought it would smell like. Herbaceous, earthy, anise tones but not overwhelmingly licorice-y.
Later on, when I had the chance to taste-test it, I was equally blown away. Simply terrific and tastes like my imaginings of how it “used to” taste during it’s hey-day. It has a wonderfully golden hue and is a true pleasure to sip.
REDUX Absinthe should be coming into production shortly, although I do not yet have the official date. Stephen is also working on some very exciting ideas for eaux de vies and aguardientes.
So how many absinthes have you tried and which are your favorites? Here’s a link to a SurveyMonkey page from the Absinthe Review Network. They want to know what we all think of absinthe - both those available here in the US and abroad.
